Animal experimentation

Animal testing is cornerstone in the field of biomedical research. This facet requires, for ethical, legal and research quality reasons that the conditions of laboratory animals are standardized with respect to the ethical use of animals, enforcement of existing legislation on the issue and ensuring the repeatability of results using medical and environmental standards in animal models. The development of laboratory animal science has led a growing demand in the effort to maintain optimal housing conditions which affects infrastructure, working protocols and staff training.

Currently IBIMA researchers have at their disposal the Animal Research Center at the University of Malaga for maintenance, breeding and housing of animals used in the different experimental procedures relevant to ongoing research projects. The center was established as a centralized animal facility for experimental animals and for research support that meets the above-mentioned requirements and maintains a philosophy of adapting to the improvements imposed by scientific progress and user demand.

  • Objectives
  • Services
  • Members
  • The main objectives of the ECAI offered to the different research groups are:
  • Maintain and raise animals for experimentation under standard laboratory conditions, current rules and regulations, and the principles of good laboratory practice.
  • Provide a suitable location in situ for executing procedures, data collection, and sampling without removing the animal from its surroundings, providing quality and reproducibility of results.
  • Offer the most extensive possible set of devices and phenotyping tests for laboratory animals to meet the demand in this field.
  • Support research offering:
    • Consulting on animal studies.
    • Consulting on refinement protocols for animal experimentation, analgesia anesthesia, palliative measures, care etc.
    • Staff education and training in compliance with prevailing regulations.
  • Encourage responsible and efficient use of animal experimentation under the philosophy of the 3Rs.
  • Train and legally qualify research staff for the execution of category B and C experimental procedures.
  • Procurement service for animal model
  • Mouse/rat maintenance and breeding service
  • Rabbit maintenance and breeding service
